These volunteer gandy dancers are starting to work on the track in the North Woods. Here is Jiggs and C. Gendreau pulling a tie out of the ballast. The tie is loosened from the ballast either with a jackhammer or pick. The track is jacked up a half inch or so. Tie tongs are attached to the horse's tugs by a chain and the horseis told to step up. Pop goes the tie.

Not all of our methods are 19th century- here a gasoline jackhammer is being used to break-up ballast. Here Engineer John Theberge is waiting to move a car, This locomotive made around 10 car movements in support of New Member Day. John does seem to be enjoying himself.
